Telepsychiatry - A Brief HistoryTelepsychiatry, as a branch of telemedicine, may be defined as the delivery of psychiatric treatment remotely, using live two-way video-teleconferencing equipment. Telepsychiatry has been approved by the American Psychiatric Association and a growing body of research data clearly demonstrates that psychiatric treatment via telepsychiatry can be as effective as when delivered during traditional outpatient appointments. Skype (TM) Telepsychiatry refers to recent advances in consumer video-conferencing software and the associated 256-bit Security Encryption, which allows for a HIPAA-compliant platform without the start-up costs normally associated with telepsychiatry. Now even the smallest, most remote clinics may offer psychiatric expertise to their patients. Provided services may include both psychotherapy and medication management for a variety of disorders including anxiety, mood disorders, and addiction. Some patients may access the psychiatrist from the privacy of their own homes, thereby allowing for a level of convenience, efficiency, and privacy unmatched in traditional outpatient psychiatric treatment. Voyager termed this process home-based telepsychiatry in 2006 and published on this process in 2008. Voyager Telepsychiatry LLC introduces the National Telepsychiatry Network (c) linking the supply of private psychiatrists offering Skype (TM) Telepsychiatry to the growing demand by individuals and clinics around the world. Offer and receive telepsychiatry services without investing in expensive equipment! Skype (TM) is available as a free download from Skype Limited
